Sean Avery Conference Call
Jul 2nd, 2008 | By Joe McDonald | Category: NHL Stories, NYSR BlogI listened in on the Sean Avaery Conference Call and there will be a full story later, but here’s the transcript:
On Playing with Brett Hull
Brett was my favorite player when I was a kid and my relationship has gone on since I left Detroit. He did a hell of a job as a player and he continued to do a hell of a job as a GM. It certainly is a comfortable situation and I think I am certainly happy with the commitment they have with me.
On his play
What I’ve done it to manipulate the line I think. I have certainly matured as a player and I am not the same player I was four or five years ago, or even three years ago. The opportunity I got in New York certainly helped my career. I like to push the edge. That’s how I play and how I live. That’s what’s I am all about. I learned to do it hurting a team.
On being a sore loser
If I was running a team, I certainly wouldn’t like losing. I don’t like losing. At times I would push that envelope. It’s not what the traditionalist wants, but I want to win.
On moving on from the Rangers
I didn’t really know. Probably two weeks ago I prepared myself for that situation. Mentally I told myself it was not going to happen and I wanted to make decision to go somewhere I would be happy and play hard and I think Dallas is the ideal place for that.
On being away from Vogue
No we do everything on email now. We don’t have offices.
On the Rangers and New York
I spent a year and a half in New York and it’s the place I feel I will come back and live. It’s become part of me and I call it home now. Playing for the Rangers, I certainly loved the New York fans and playing at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately it was not in my control the decision was there and in front of me and I had to do it. You have to think about your future. I loved staying in New York and playing in New York and it’s a new chapter.
On the Dallas Stars
I certainly wanted to go a team that has a chance to win. That’s an understatement here. Last year they had a really good chance to win and they needed a few pieces to push them over the top and hopefully I am one of them.
On why the Rangers didn’t sign him
It certainly was one of those things I was thinking about prior to today and figure out why it was happening. I woke up this morning and I had a new team and a new commitment and expressed how badly they wanted me on their team. As far as that goes, I have to think about that now and not why they didn’t want me back in New York.
On the Western Conference
The travel is different. I am excited to cause a disturbance to quite a few guys who were happy I was gone for a year and a half. That’s just part of sports and being a professional athlete. It’s beneficial I spent time in the west after being a part of the east.
On the Islanders
There was nothing going on there. If they were smart they would have tried to sign me.
